In Brisbane - hopefully some pics from the last week
Apologies for being completely silent on the blog front, but I've been out of all normal channels of communication. After Cairns we drove down to Ayrlie beach where 8 of us got on a sailing yacht for a 2 night trip around the Whitsunday isles.
There are 74 islands in the Whitsundays and we sailed around a few of them on our trip. It's the first time I've ever been on a proper sailing boat and I had a brilliant time. We helped to hoist the sails and all that other sailing jargon. We did a couple of snorkels, a lot of sailing, visited an aboriginal cave, and went to Whitehaven beach - one of the top 10 beaches in the world according to someone. It was beautiful, and the sand is pure white - shame about the jellyfish.
After the sailing trip we had one night on Long Island, also in the Whitsundays. It was a bit of a cheesy resort with very little of substance that you could do, but it was ok. The next day we drove down the coast and inland to the Capricorn Caves. They're a large cave system that is actually all above the ground - it's like a big hill with a bunch of caves in it. If you do a google you should find them - I'll try and put a picture on here but time is running out rather. Had a fun caving expedition while we were there and fed kangaroos the next day.
After that we drove down and took a ferry over to Fraser Island. Fraser Island is one of the largest sand islands in the world - it is completely made from sand, with a rainforest growing on it and a fairly extensive fresh water aquifer which manifests itself in water holes and lakes around the island.
We had two rather interesting alcoholic evenings by the pool, and I was fit enough in the morning after one of them to do an 8 km return walk to Lake Wobby - a picturesque water hole a bit further up the coast and inland. This morning we took the ferry back to the mainland and are on our way down to the Gold Coast where we stay for two nights.
I'm currently in Brisbane after finding the nearest internet cafe - hopefully I'll get a number of pictures uploaded...

After we'd all gone into the pool in our clothes
Drinks by the pool
Feeding the roos
Caving at Capricorn caves
On deck with a beer
Our ship
Me on the boat in the Whitsundays
A nice sunset
Our motley crew
Whitehaven beach (part of it)
The best seat on the boat
Stinger suits - sexy or what? They're to avoid the jellyfish
A shovel-nosed shark
On board
Our ship - the Independent Endeavour
